The Farm

Generations of Farming Heritage

A Family Rooted in the Land

Mount Briscoe passed down through the generations and after the death of Louis Edgill in April 1950, the task of running the Mount Briscoe farm went to his youngest son, W. H. (Henry) Edgill born in 1936. The Edgill’s were noted to be assiduous farmers and successful breeders of horses and pedigree bulls.

Henry married Elizabeth Payne from Ballymoe, County Galway in 1962, they had two children William and Margaret. The farm is composed of 16ha of mixed forestry and 30ha of grassland. Henry & Betty ran a beef suckler herd and produced Hereford weanlings off a grass-fed system. Henry retired from active farming in 2012/’13. They were early adopters to organic farming and were certified in 1998.

The Next Generation of Farming

Mount Briscoe’s eleventh generation farmer Margaret Edgill returned to her agricultural roots in 2013. She has embraced farming with the same ethos and principles laid down by previous generations. Margaret breeds a mixture of pedigree Irish Moiled and Shorthorns along with pedigree Irish Draught horses. Margaret has shown cattle and horses at numerous agricultural shows and prizes won include All Ireland Champion awards. In 2023 Margaret was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship and in 2025 Farming for Nature Ambassador.
